CHAPTER NINE

Thursday morning, Harper woke and got out of bed as quietly as she could so that Reagan could stay asleep. Their new apartment was bathed in early November morning light and Harper needed to switch on an overhead light before starting the coffee. She reminded herself to thank Ms. McKane for stocking their fridge with breakfast food. They would need to get a vehicle leased today and get in some food. As she looked over the kitchen island and the dining table, she saw her new home come into focus. There were comfortable and elegant furnishings which to her delighted surprise was close to what she would have purchased herself. “I guess Reagan and I are more transparent than we thought. Ms. McKane has done well,” she said quietly to herself.

“What was that, Baby?” Reagan asked as she walked across the living room.

“Talking to myself. Ms. Kane did a great job furnishing our home.”

“She did. Ah, good! Coffee. Can I pour you a cup after I find the mugs?”

“Cupboard above the coffeepot. I need the powder room and then I will make us breakfast. Okay?”

Harper returned quickly and sat on the stool by the island. “Bacon and eggs or bagels and cream cheese?” she asked.

“Bagels this morning, I think. What is the plan for today?” Reagan asked as she took a sip of her coffee.

“Winter coats and boots and a new vehicle. Oh, and you need to take me out for dinner. We have breakfast food but we need a serious grocery expedition. Maybe tomorrow if we get a vehicle?”

“I have done some research about winter driving and the best vehicle to lease. You are going to like the results. It seems that Jeeps are the safest and handle well in snow. So I think we should lease one. What do you think?”

Harper hugged her fiancé. She would choose an ox cart if that is what Rae wanted, but a Jeep was a wonderful idea. They met the building concierge as they waited for a taxi. “Good morning,” a lively young woman addressed them. “You are our newest residents. Welcome. My name is Benita Gonsalves, but everybody calls me Benni. I am happy to help you find your way around the city.”

“Hi Benni. We are on the hunt for winter coats and boots. Where is a good place?”

“I personally like The Bay. They have been keeping people warm for three hundred years. I shop at the one at the St. Laurent Centre in the east end.”

“Thanks. And, we expect to arrive back here with a newly leased Jeep. I assume our parking is arranged.”

“It is, but I will double check. Your FOB will work to open the door to the underground parking and your spot is PE1.”

“Thanks, Benni. We will see you soon.”

They hurried to the cab. “Crap rea! Its

freezing!”

“Yeah, it’s brisk for sure. But we have thin fall jackets and we are southerners. We will adjust, I am sure.”

Two hours later, they left the store with full length
